Learning Difficult Vocabulary about Digital Literacy: Teacher Video Clip

TEACHING CHANNEL: Vocabulary Teaching Ideas on Video-Clips

This series of Teaching Channel videos show how one pre-teaches vocabulary words before tackling a digital literacy topic. Another makes sure to involve students actively in the reading process. This is a very important skill to develop for close reading. After all of unknown words are gathered by students, a teacher can mix them up and have them define them. That way the students are exposed to even more new words and they can see what their classmates chose. This "Collaborative Discovery" process greatly helps them understand the vocabulary words for a specific concept, but also to understand the words in the context and how they are used. This Korean-American teacher created fun ways for children to expand their vocabulary using both picture cards displayed on class bulletin boards along with a "College Talk" Technique here: College Talk.

A similar most engaging classroom technique to use for building a more robust vocabulary is called Vocabulary Paint Chips, illustrated here.

10 SITES FOR EDUCATIONAL DOCUMENTARIES

Top 10 Alternatives to YouTube by David Kapuler

"Documentary films constitute a broad category of nonfictional motion pictures intended to document some aspect of reality, primarily for the purposes of instruction or maintaining a historical record. (Wikipedia)" Documentaries are used in education all the time to educate and inform students about different nonfictional topics. While there are a ton of sites to choose from, I've decide to curate this list to make it easier for educators to find what they are looking for.*This list is in alphabetical order.

1. Chockadoc - A nice site for finding documentaries w/ an educational category where people can rate videos as well.

2. Documentary Heaven - A great place to find 1000's of documentaries on a wide variety of subjects.

3. Documentary Storm - A fun community for finding documentaries rated on a 6 star scale. Users have the ability to leave comments and collaborate w/ others.

4. Documentary Tube - A wonderful place to find documentaries where users can save documentaries by creating playlists.

5. Documentary Wire - A simple site w/ lots of educational documentaries to browse through.

VIDEOS BEST FOR ESL/ENGLISH-LEARNING:

Grockit

Grockit Answers lets you pick any video from YouTube and create a series of questions about it. The great feature is that you can set the time on the video for each question to alert the viewer when the answer will appear. It's an excellent scaffold for Beginning English Language Learners.

ESL Video

ESL Video is still clearly the overall best video quiz creation site for ELL's. Grockit Answers, though, is also easy to use, and its timing annotation could be very helpful to Beginners. See more at The Best Online Video Sites For Learning English.

VIDEO-CONFERENCING PROGRAMS

Watchitoo Creates Online Video Chat Service

Watchitoo has created a "Playground" video service that lets you have up to eleven people on a video call at one time for free. You can pay for expanded services. Unfortunately, all the participants actually have to register on Watchitoo in order to be on the call, as opposed to other services which just require the initiator to be registered, but it's still a decent service. I'm adding it to The Best Online Tools For Real-Time Collaboration.

All The Trunk Monkeys - Video

All the ads compiled. Know your monkey! Watch Video about Trucks, Monkeys, Commercials by Metacafe.com.

Bill Ferriter just posted a link to this "Trunk Monkey Compilation." This hilarious video is perfect for ELL's to watch and then describe what happened, and even do Venn Diagram to identify differences and similarities between them. Have class groups try to summarize and explain or even re-enact one of them.

BIG MARKER

Big Marker is a free web conferencing community ideal for educators and students. This is a great place to create a private room to collaborate by: chatting, sharing documents, etc. There are three categories of attendees: participant, presenter, and moderator. VOICETHREAD APP

VoiceThread is a nifty free iPad/iPhone app for users of VoiceThread. A user can pretty much do the same thing they can do on the site such as uploading photos, adding comments, adding audio, and then drawing over a picture. When the digital story is done it can then be shared via an email. Also, this is a great way to manage and view VoiceThreads on a mobile device.

LEARN ZILLION

Learn Zillion is an excellent site for getting free video lessons set to state standards. This site is ideal for educators, parents, and students for grades 9 and up. Right now the only video lessons I can find are on all aspects of math/algebra/geometry etc. but I'm assuming other subjects are soon to come.

VEENGLE

Veengle is cool new site that I found out about from Free Technology 4 Teachers. This is a great site for editing and mashing up videos. This is done by searching for a video and then editing that video by either cropping it or adjusting the colors. This process is done over and over to different videos and then weaved together by transitions.

SMIVI

Smivi is a new video search engine. A great feature is the ability to categorize the way you want to search by typing in a simple command. Also, a user can search through live results or even follow specific videos for those that get updated quite frequently. Finally, there is a social section which allows registered users to comment and chat on videos.

ShortForm Looks Like A Nice Way To Collect Your Favorite Videos Into Your Own "Channel"

In addition, you can create live events where videos can be shown to an audience. You can read more about it at TechCrunch. Find more at The Best Ways To Create Online Video Playlists.

Voice Of America Special English - US History From China

Voice of America Special English is a wonderful resource for English Language Learners. It broadcasts news using a simple and limited vocabulary, and is very accessible to ELLs. Not only does it provide reports on current events, but it also has special series on U.S. History, geography, and many other particular areas of interest. You can access both the audio and transcript on the Web. But since their audio is often deleted, those wanting to do both Extensive Reading together with Extensive Listening practice will do better to use this well-organized site made by some very practical Chinese.

VERBS, PHRASAL VERBS

Learn about phrasal verbs in English.

Phrasal verbs are combinations of words that are used like a verb and consist of a verb and an adverb or a preposition, for example, "give up" or "go on." The new combination results in a new verb having a different meaning. Phrasal verbs are very common in English and one of the major difficulties faced by ESL learners. It is important that you learn them in order to understand and speak English in a natural manner.

Better English

This is a great starting point. Go to this site and you are immediately given a list of areas such as grammar, collocations and multi-word verbs. Simply click on the one that interests you and you will be taken to a separate list of exercises (there are also some very good business English crosswords). Most of the exercises offer instant feedback. The site is free and easy to navigate.

Brigham Young - CNN

This site offers supplementary material for a TV broadcast that CNN makes to schools around the world in English. It is free and students don't need to watch the programs to do, and get benefit from, the exercises here. Feedback is instant and there is plenty of material. This is organized by the dates of university terms (the site is run by Brigham Young University). Just click on Exercises or Vocabulary and then choose a date and you will get a list of exercises. Not everything is business-based, but much of it is.

Linguarama

This site is also free. When you open it, you will see a list of drop-down menus, eg Reading, Grammar and Vocabulary. There are some interesting reading articles; they don't have accompanying comprehension questions as such (you could make up your own), but they do have exercises on the meanings of words within the text. Checking answers to the grammar exercises can be a little slow as you have to check each item individually

This website allows you to quickly and easily search for a wide range of words and phrases of English in the 100 million word British National Corpus. As with some other BNC interfaces, you can search for words and phrases by exact word or phrase, wildcard or part of speech, or combinations of these. You can also search for surrounding words (collocates) within a ten-word window (e.g. all nouns somewhere near paper, all adjectives near woman, or all nouns near spin). One unique aspect of the corpus is the ability to find the frequency of words and phrases in any combination of registers that you define (spoken, academic, poetry, medical, etc). In addition, you can compare between registers -- for example, verbs that are more common in legal or medical texts, or nouns near break that are more common in fiction than in academic writing. Finally, you can easily compare between synonyms and other semantically-related words. One simple search, for example, compares the most frequent nouns that appear with sheer, complete, or utter (sheer nonsense, complete account, utter dismay). The interface also allows you to input information from WordNet (a semantically-organized lexicon of English) directly into the search form. This allows you to find the frequency and distribution of words with similar, more general, or more specific meanings. Please feel free to take a three minute guided tour, which will show the major features of the corpus. A simple click for each query will automatically fill in the form for you, search through the 100 million words of text, and then display the results. We believe that this interface to the BNC is fast, free, and easy to use, and that it offers important features not found in any other interface to the BNC (or any other large corpus of English, for that matter).

ADELEX ANALYSER (ADA)

ADELEX TEXT ANALYSER tool is part of the research carried out by the members of the ADELEX team at the University of Granada. It enables the user to analyze the lexical difficulty of written texts in English on the basis of information contained in a 7,000-word frequency list drawn from the British National Corpus, Bank of English and Longman Corpus Network databases. Its two versions (English and Spanish) attempt to provide a more accurate and updated way of analysing texts, by using frequency bands of up to 7,000 words. Once students learn how to use all of these, they should be over the “Minimum Threshold Level” needed for fluent, independent reading. The analysis divides this list into 7 bands:

  • Band 1: from word no. 1 to word no. 1,000
  • Band 2: from word no. 1,001 to word no. 2,000
  • Band 3: from word no. 2,001 to word no. 3,000
  • Band 4: from word no. 3,001 to word no. 4,000
  • Band 5: from word no. 4,001 to word no. 5,000
  • Band 6: from word no. 5,001 to word no. 6,000
  • Band 7: from word no. 6,001 to word no. 7,000

READABILITY CHECKS

Text analyzers, word frequency checks, and vocabulary highlighting programs to improve online reading

Compleat Lexical Vocab Profiler

Use Compleat Lexical Vocab Profiler to estimate readability of any text: Any text inputted will output a Color-Coded Analysis showing you all the words of your text by word frequency levels: K1 words used (from lst most common 1,000 English words in blue); K2 words used (2nd most common 1,001-2000 words used in green); AWL words (Academic Word List terms) used in brown; and off-list words in red. This way you can focus on learning any academic or off-list words, once most common words have been mastered.

AWL Highlighter (CAVE)

Use AWL highlighter as a core academic vocabulary evaluator (CAVE) to identify AWL at any of 10 levels in any text you submit up to 2400 characters. Focus on learning how to use these highlighted core academic vocabulary, either by writing your own sentences, creative vocabulary stories, or better yet by using them actively in interview questions practiced with a partner. Review highlighted words 1-3 days later by means of the AWL gap-maker, based on the text you read and studied before. Uses a section or summary of a text.

UsingEnglish.com’s Text Content Analysis Tool

Analyze text content using this free text analysis tool which gives you statistics about a text including word count; unique words; number of sentences; average words per sentence; lexical density; and the Gunning Fog readability index. More detailed statistics are available to members. This analyzer will accept text up to 500KB in size. Target texts can be typed or pasted in on this page for analysis.

It also has printable versions of cloze, quiz and weblinks activities for homework or in-class use.

Lingual Net

Lingual Net is another video-based English study site. There are currently over 60 short movies with accompanying activities to study from. Although not originally intended for language learning, D. Film Moviemaker is a Flash-based site which lets users create short movies. My experience with this site in the classroom has been extremely positive with students creating some original, creative short stories with this site. Excellent for task-based projects.
